Lionel 6-28052 O Gauge N&W Class A Articulated 2-6-6-4 Steam Loco & Tender #1218 LN/Box

This is a Lionel 6-28052 O Gauge Norfolk & Western Class A Articulated 2-6-6-4 Steam Locomotive & Tender #1218 from 2000. Continuing in a new line of highly detailed, smooth running Lionel articulated steam locomotives comes the Norfolk & Western Class A. Built in N&W’s famous Roanoke shops from the late 1930’s to 1950, the Class A set new speed records for steam locomotives. Weighing in at close to 600,000 pounds, these behemoths were needed for speed and power through the mountainous areas of N&W’s routes and the ability to haul heavy tonnage at speeds of 60 mph on the flat areas of the route. The Class A’s were so successful, that N&W built 43 in total. They proved to be worth their weight in gold. Lionel brings this impressive locomotive to life with the all-new N&W 1218 Class A Steam Locomotive. Made from completely new tooling, this locomotive brings power and realism to your layout. Powered by a brawny Pittman® motor, the die-cast locomotive and tender glide effortlessly across your tracks. Its features are seemingly endless. Included are Command Control, Class A Articulated RailSounds, a swing-out scale coupler on the pilot, wireless tether, brakeman’s doghouse on tender, red firebox glow, lighted number boards, separately applied metal details, and much, much more. The 1218, restored to its original splendor, was put into excursion service in 1987, and is recreated yet again as only Lionel can.

Introduced in the early 20th century, the 2-6-6-4 were unveiled as part of the "Super Steam Power" models due to their booster equipped trailing trucks, and larger fireboxes. The 2-6-6-4 engines were built for the Pittsburgh and Virginia Rail Road, and were primarily mountain loggers. Not known for speed, but rather their power, the 2-6-6-4 could amass up to 5,000 draw-bar horse-power at speeds of up to 45mph. Going out of commission in 1959 at the start of dieselization, the 2-6-6-4 would eventually be oved to a preservation status with some on display today at rail-road museums in North America!
